Oh, la dolce vita. The Italians are well known for their amazing food, fashion, wine, and many other wonderful things (like the Ferrari F1 team... of 2007). Given their absolute mastery of the finer things in life, it was obvious we needed to find out if they could also excel in the cigar world.
Now, one thing you need to understand is that out of all the countries in the EU, the Italians are at the bottom when it comes to cigar stores. Likely because the cigarette industry is extremely dominant there. It is so bad that not even Plasencia dominates there, and they dominate in every country I've ever been in, excluding the DR and Cuba for obvious reasons. Davidoff does seem to have the upper edge, just below the Italian king, Toscano. More on Toscano later.
#1 La Certosa - Siena, IT - Rating 52.5 out of 60
Best for: A life of refinement
Welcome to La Certosa Di Maggiano, the most wonderful hotel we have ever stayed in. This isn't just a hotel. It is a life experience because you just don't "stay" in La Certosa. You live it. The service, the architecture, the staff, the every conceivable detail. This is a placed created by love and love and inspiration is what issues thought their Italian artisans walls.
The hotel has it all! even a private renaissance cathedral. So, of course, they have cigars. Normally, when I see a non-built-in humidor, I tend not to expect much. However, like everything in the hotel, this amenity was second to none. You don't just walk into a store/place and DUNHILL is on the menu.

#2 Hotel De Ricci - Rome, IT - Rating 50.9 out of 60
Best for: VIP Cigar Lounge
Hotel De Ricci is where the truly affluent retreat, because to them something like the Four Seasons can be too corporate. Here, you can finally find sanctuary away from the people carrying selfie sticks or those who swear they have the next Ferrari release allocation just to flex.
Although we ranked this location at #2, make no mistake: they boast the only cigar lounge in Rome where you can truly smoke cigars and drink the best. And when we say 'smoke,' I’m referring to the heavy hitters. A Behike and Krug? a Trinidad LE and a 50-year-old Macallan? or a RyJ Short Churchill and caviar? That will not be a problem here.
Ensure you make a reservation if visiting during high season. No dress code but please don't wear crocs. Ever.

#3 La Casa Del Habano Fincato - 41 out of 60
Best for: Cool factor
Visiting an LCDH in a foreign country is usually like taking a kid to a candy store for us. Unfortunately, the selection at the Rome location is quite limited; there were very few Cuban cigars available, a small variety of New World options, and plenty of Toscanos. While the shop itself is magnificent—matching the classic beauty of Rome—the experience was a bit of a mixed bag. The staff is generally friendly and helpful. I highly recommend checking their hours before visiting, as they are quite limited.
RATING - 41 out of 60
Place: 8 out of 10 Cool store but you can't smoke inside
Cigars: 6 out of 10 Not many cigars available for a LCDH
Prices: 8 out of 10 Cheapest cuban prices in Europe
Staff: 8.5 out of 10 Friendly and professional
Amenities: 6.5 out of 10 Just a store
Smoking Area: 3.5 out of 10 You can't smoke inside but at least you are in Rome

#4 Tabacchi at Via Ottaviano - 37.5 out of 60
Best for: Selection and saving money
You will see many Tabacchi stores throughout Italy, and each will have its own unique stock. We found the Tabacchi on Via Ottaviano to have the second best selection of cigars in the Rome and Tuscany regions. The inventory is impressive enough to rival the LCDH rating. This shop, in particular, boasted a wide variety of Cuban cigars alongside 'New World' brands like Davidoff and Plasencia. As you can see in the photos, there was even a line just to get in.

#5 Tabaccheria Vannicelli dal 1954 - Specialisti Pipe e Sigari a Roma - Rating: n/a
Best for: Rare selection
Established in 1954, Tabaccheria Vannicelli boasts perhaps the finest selection of cigars in the Rome area. While located on the city's outskirts, the journey is well worth it for connoisseurs: it stands as the only retailer besides La Casa del Habano (LCDH) to feature a full walk-in humidor. Beyond its impressive facilities, Vannicelli is renowned for its inventory of rare and vintage cigars—treasures that are exceptionally difficult to find elsewhere in Rome or even throughout Tuscany. Did I mentioned they also carry Opus X?

Bonus: Toscano
Best for: Italian experience
I was surprised and humbled, a true "never judge a book by its cover" scenario. During our trip, we saw Toscanos in every single tobacco store, including a Tabacchi in Florence. There, we asked for the best Toscano available, and the gentleman working offered us a Toscano Bracco.
The Bracco was a fine, fire-cured full-bodied cigar. The curing process infuses the cigar with a deep, dark flavor and high nicotine content. The shape, compared to regular cigars, is very distinct—something called "bitronconico". No binder?! While most cigars have a filler, a binder, and a wrapper, Toscanos only use filler and a wrapper, contributing to their rustic, veiny appearance. Do not let that fool you; it is excellently rolled. Because they are fire-cured and fermented, they do not require a humidor. You can keep them in your pocket or a desk drawer without them losing their integrity. I’m sure many will find that useful.
So, can Italians excel in the cigar world? They can. They might not boast the sheer volume of shops found in Miami or the "vault-status" rarities of Basel, but Italy offers something arguably more valuable: a soul. In Italy, a cigar isn't just a product; it’s an invitation to slow down and enjoy life.
Special thanks to the best restaurant in Rome, Sfiziami Italian Bistrot at Via degli Ombrellari, 7, 00193 Roma RM, Italy. You were part of the soul of our vacation.
